Eucera

Eucera are robust, medium-sized to large solitary bees. They are found in all continents except for Australia and Antarctica. Both sexes are densely haired, with a voluminous build, long mouthparts and several species have abdominal hair bands. Females have very thick legs covered in unbranched scopal hairs. Males are known for their strikingly long antennae and bright yellow faces that makes them easy to spot in the field. They are also known as important pollinators of deceptive orchids from the genus Ophrys. They build their nests in light soil, occasionally forming aggregations. Of the 89 species described in Europe, only two are currently found in Luxembourg.
