Melecta

Melecta

Of the 26 species described in Europe, only two are currently found in Luxembourg.

Melecta are robust, moderately large, conspicuous parasitic bees. Both sexes have a slightly pointy abdomen and striking patches of white or gray hairs that contrast sharply against the black cuticle underneath. They are cuckoo bees that attack the nests of Anthophora. In spring, females can be observed patrolling potential nesting areas of the host looking for unattended burrows. If they find a sealed nest, they may open a hole to deposit an egg in the cell wall. Upon hatching, the larva kills the brood of the host and consumes the food supplies.
